In pursuit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has decided to create five new districts in the union territory.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced this historic decision, stating that the new districts of Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang will bring the benefits of governance and public welfare schemes closer to the people.
Ladakh, being a vast and sparsely populated region, has faced challenges in effective administration and service delivery under the current two-district structure of Leh and Kargil. The creation of five additional districts will address this issue, enabling the central and UT governments to reach the grassroots level more efficiently.
“After the formation of these five districts, now all the public welfare schemes of the Central Government and Ladakh Administration will be able to reach the people easily and more and more people will be able to take advantage of them,” Shah said in a social media post.
The MHA has given in-principle approval for the new districts and has directed the Ladakh administration to form a committee to assess various aspects related to their formation, such as headquarters, boundaries, structure, and creation of posts. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three months, after which the final proposal will be sent to the Home Ministry for further action.
This decision is in line with the Narendra Modi government’s commitment to the all-round development of Ladakh and empowering the people at the grassroots level. The creation of five new districts is expected to significantly improve governance, service delivery, and overall progress in the union territory.
