NEW DELHI, Nov 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the HT Leadership Summit on Saturday, attributed decades of violence in Kashmir to indecisiveness by previous governments, asserting that the region has since entered a new era of change.

In his keynote address, PM Modi drew a sharp contrast between the past and present, emphasizing the transformation in the country’s fight against terrorism. He stated, “There was a time when people felt unsafe in their homes and cities due to terrorism sponsored by neighboring countries. However, times have changed. Today, even terrorists do not feel safe in their own homes.”

Recalling his visit to an exhibition showcasing the events of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack, Modi said he also came across historical clippings about Kashmir’s integration with India. “Seeing those clippings, I felt the same excitement and pride that the people of India experienced in October 1947. However, I also realized how indecisiveness over the years had kept Kashmir trapped in a cycle of violence and uncertainty for seven decades,” he remarked.

The prime minister expressed satisfaction with the current developments in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly noting the high voter turnout in recent elections. “It is heartening to see news of record voting being published these days,” he said, underlining the positive shift in public engagement with democracy in the region.

Modi also highlighted the success of peace initiatives in other parts of the country, referencing his participation in the first Bodoland Mohotsav in Delhi on Friday. He praised the transformation brought about by the 2020 Bodo Peace Accord, noting how a region plagued by decades of violence had embraced peace and cultural celebration.

“The participation of youth and communities who had once taken up arms, now celebrating a cultural event, is a testimony to the transformative power of peace. Their lives have been positively altered, offering a beacon of hope for others,” Modi added.

Concluding his address, Modi emphasized that decisive governance and a commitment to peace and development have paved the way for a more secure and prosperous future for regions like Jammu and Kashmir. “The changes we see today are a result of a clear vision and strong resolve,” he asserted.

The prime minister’s remarks not only underscored the progress in conflict-ridden areas but also served as a reminder of the importance of decisive action in addressing historical challenges. (with PTI inputs)
