NEW DELHI, July 21: In a significant development from the nation’s capital, Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Monday, stepping down from the country’s second-highest constitutional office. The surprise resignation comes citing personal health reasons, ending a tenure marked by dignity, grace, and deep constitutional engagement.
In his letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar conveyed his heartfelt gratitude for what he described as a “soothing and wonderful working relationship” with the Head of State. He thanked the President for her constant support during his time in office and praised the constitutional synergy they shared.
Dhankhar also extended his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Council of Ministers for their unwavering cooperation. “The Prime Minister’s support has been invaluable in navigating the responsibilities of this high office,” he wrote, highlighting the harmonious functioning between the executive and the constitutional head of the Rajya Sabha.
Fondly recalling his interactions with Members of Parliament across party lines, the outgoing Vice President noted that the warmth, trust, and camaraderie he received from MPs will remain “ever cherished and embedded in my memory.” His role as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha had earned him appreciation for maintaining order and upholding democratic traditions.
Reflecting on the nation’s current trajectory, Dhankhar hailed India’s economic transformation and rising global stature. He described his service during this transformative phase of India’s journey as “a true honor.”
“As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements. I hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future,” Dhankhar concluded, hinting at his enduring optimism for the country’s path ahead.
Jagdeep Dhankhar, a seasoned lawyer and politician, assumed the Vice Presidency in August 2022 after serving as the Governor of West Bengal. Known for his assertive style and constitutional clarity, Dhankhar’s resignation marks the end of a significant chapter in India’s contemporary political landscape.
