JAMMU, July 28: In a chilling turn of events following a road mishap in Jammu’s Gandhi Nagar area, the police have seized the Mahindra Thar SUV involved in a collision with a scooty and detained its owner for questioning. The driver of the vehicle, however, remains on the run.
According to a statement issued by the Jammu Police, the incident occurred on Saturday, July 27, 2025, near Green Belt Park in Gandhi Nagar. Preliminary investigation revealed that the Thar, bearing registration number JK02DP-9594, was being driven recklessly from Gandhi Nagar towards Green Belt Park when it collided with a scooty (JK02BS-6435) coming from the opposite direction near Allora Textiles at approximately 1:30 PM.
The impact left the scooty rider seriously injured. Eyewitnesses acted swiftly, rushing the victim to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu for treatment. Meanwhile, the Thar driver fled the scene.
Taking cognizance of the incident, Gandhi Nagar Police registered FIR No. 163/2025 under Sections 281 and 125(a) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Acting on the lead, Station House Officer (SHO) Gandhi Nagar and his team launched an investigation.
Crucial evidence, including CCTV footage from the site and an eyewitness account, has since surfaced, revealing a disturbing development. The driver, after the initial collision, allegedly reversed the SUV and intentionally hit the victim a second time, causing severe injuries.
Based on this revelation, police have added Section 109 of the BNS to the FIR, treating the case with utmost seriousness. The Thar has been taken into custody and will undergo a thorough mechanical inspection. The vehicle’s registered owner has been detained for questioning to aid in the ongoing probe.
Meanwhile, a manhunt is underway to locate and apprehend the absconding driver.
Police officials, under the supervision of SDPO South and SP South Jammu, are meticulously pursuing all leads, including forensic, technical, and legal aspects, to ensure justice is served. Authorities have appealed to the public to share any relevant information that could assist in the investigation.
