LEH, Sept 30: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday ordered the suspension of all mobile internet services, including 2G, 3G, 4G, 5G, and public Wi-Fi facilities in Leh district of the Union Territory of Ladakh. The suspension will remain in force from 6:00 pm on September 29 until 6:00 pm on October 3, 2025.
According to the order issued under the powers conferred by the Telecommunication Act, 2023 and the Telecommunications (Temporary Suspension of Services) Rules, 2024, the decision was taken citing unavoidable circumstances. The Ministry stated that it was not feasible to seek approval of the Competent Authority due to emergent conditions and that the move was necessary in the interest of public safety and security.
The order, signed by Bimlesh Kumar Jha, Under Secretary to the Government of India, stressed that the suspension was aimed at safeguarding the defence and security of the State, maintaining public order, and preventing the incitement of offences.
The directive was issued with the approval of the Joint Secretary (Cyber & Information Security) in the Ministry of Home Affairs. The move reflects the government’s precautionary approach in view of potential law-and-order issues, though the specific circumstances necessitating the suspension were not disclosed in the order.
The suspension is expected to impact daily life and communication across Leh, with students, businesses, and residents set to face difficulties in accessing internet-based services until October 3.
