Amid pandemonium by opposition, winter session of parliament ends; endorses 16 bills

Srinagar Dec 14: Amid severe pandemonium in the upper house of parliament Rajya Sabha on Friday, the winter session started from November 18 was formally culminated with the passing of 16 bills including most contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

According to news agency, the Rajya Sabha ended its winter session on Friday with approving 16 bills which includes Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), Special Protection Group (SPG), Protection of Rights for Transgender (PRT) and others. With the end of 250th session of Rajya Sabha, the house suspended its work to an indefinite time.

According to official sources, the house which sat from November 18 convened 20 meetings where different issues pertaining to country was raked up by the members of several political parties including BJP, Congress, AIDMK, RJD, TN, Shiv Sena and others.

As the proceedings of the house were started on the last day, the house witnessed severe uproar over the contentious statement of opposition leader Rahul Gandhi over escalation of rape incidents in the country. The house also reverberated with huge noise as Congress leaders protested and raked up the issue of protest demonstrations that erupted in North Eastern states after the house gave nod to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).

The opposition leaders were demanding that with the clearance of the bill, the rights of the people living in North Eastern states have been badly affected. Several Congress leaders raised the outcry from the public of North Eastern states and brought the issue of law and order disturbance that erupted soon after the bill was approved by both houses of the parliament.

At the occasion Trinamol Congress leader Dolasen furiously went into the well and torn the copies of the bill in front of the Chairman Venkaiya Naidu after which he suspended the proceedings of the house till afternoon. After the proceedings resumed, Chairman Rajya Sabha informed the house that winter session of the parliament has been ended and brought several bills that had been passed during the session into the notice of members.

Naidu informed members that during the winter session 16 bills were passed with majority of members casted their votes in favor.

He added, Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB), Protection of Rights of Transgender (PRT), Special Protection Group (SPG), e-cigarette bill and others were passed.

Meanwhile 17th Lok Sabha on Friday also concluded its winter session that too was started on November 18. Speaker Om Birla amidst uproar by Congress and other opposition parties informed the house about the decisions taken during the session.

Birla mentioned that the winter session of Lok Sabha witnessed 20 meetings comprising of 28 hours and 48 minutes. He said during the question hour several leaders brought critical issues into the notice of house upon which several parties put forth their version.

However Chairman Rajya Sabha Venkaiya Naidu said that current session of the house was historical and meaningful which sent positive and firm message to entire country. (JKNS)
