Bandipora, Feb 28 : A preliminary census by Wular Lake Wular Conservation and Management Authority (WCMA) in Asia’s largest freshwater lake, Wullar Lake in northern Kashmir has suggested that the lake hosts more than 50,000 birds.
A WCMA official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that the bird census was carried by the WCMA in the Wullar Lake. “In the census, bird enthusiasts participated and carried total bird counts in allotted areas of Lake,” he said.
“During the census more than 20 bird species such as Common pochards Ruddy Shellducks Grelag Geese and others were recorded,” the official said.
He further said that the exact data will be provided after the compilation, however, approximately more than 50,000 birds were recorded during the census.
He also said that the aim of the bird count is to monitor the population fluctuation trends of migratory birds and to collect overall figures to incorporate the same with the general bird count throughout India—(KNO)
