Qazigund, Feb 28 : With education department failing to take measures for its erstwhile school building, the structure has turned into nuisance for the people in Wanpora area of Qazigund. The erstwhile school building as per the locals has turned into a den for drug addicts.
News agency KNO reported a government owned building in Qazigund area continued to be used for ill activities by some people as the school education department has failed to provide any watch and ward to the building.
The school building was left abandoned around five years ago following which it has turned into a den for drug addicts, which has resulted as a big nuisance for the local residents here.
Earlier, the building housed the Government Girls Middle School Panzath Wanpora. The students of this school were later merged with adjacently located school Government High School Panzath Wanpora, leaving it abandoned.
In the premises of the buildings, one can find empty bottles of codeine (the most abused prescription drug) and empty strips of drugs used by the addicts, who come in the evening hours mostly and involve in drug abuse in these abandoned school.
The school building is now in complete shambles with broken windows and doors which apparently looks like a ghost house. “Every day group of youth come here and damage window panes of the building.
They use it for drug abuse, causing inconvenience for the passerby,” said Nazir Ahmad Shah, a local resident.
The newly appointed Chief Education Officer (CEO) Anantnag, Abdul Roub Shad quoted news agency as saying that there are at around 123 school buildings (clubbed under rationalization scheme) which are lying vacant in Anantnag district.
“It is up to the higher ups to take any decision regarding the deserted buildings,” he said. He assured to take up the issue with higher ups so that the building is put to some use reported KNO.
