KUPWARA, July 28: In a counter-insurgency success, security forces recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition during a joint operation conducted in the Chowkibal area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Based on credible intelligence input provided by Military Intelligence, a coordinated raid was launched on July 27-28, 2025, by personnel from the 160 Battalion Territorial Army (TA), 5 PARA, and Jammu and Kashmir Police from Police Station Kralpora.
The operation targeted the residence of Wali Mohammad Mir, a resident of Marsary, Chowkibal. During the search of the premises, security forces unearthed a substantial stockpile of war-like stores, including:
- One AK-56 Rifle
- Three AK-56 Magazines
- Seventeen Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) grenades
- Over 1,000 rounds of AK-series ammunition
The seizure is being seen as a major breakthrough in the efforts to disrupt terror networks and prevent potential attacks in the frontier district of Kupwara, which shares proximity with the Line of Control (LoC) and has long been vulnerable to cross-border infiltration and weapons smuggling.
Police have registered a case under FIR No. 53/2025 at Police Station Kralpora under the Arms Act (Sections 7/25), the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (Sections 13, 23, 39), and the Explosive Substances Act (Section 5).
A senior security official said that timely action helped avert what could have been a serious threat to peace in the region. “This successful operation highlights the excellent synergy between the Indian Army and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Investigations are underway to trace the source of the arms and the possible militant links of the accused,” he said.
Further searches and follow-up actions are expected in the area as agencies probe deeper into the network associated with the cache.
