Ganderbal, Feb 19: In its effort to continue public outreach and encourage sports activities in the valley, Army has organized a cricket tournament in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
The tournament by the name Chinar T-20 Cricket Tournament is being held at the government college of physical education in the Gadura area of Ganderbal.
The tournament was inaugurated on Wednesday by Maj Gen A Sengupta, YSM GOC CIF (V) in a grand ceremony in the presence of Brig Syed Ali Usman, SC, Cdr 3 Sect RR, Mr. Shafaqat Iqbal DC, Ganderbal, Mr. Khalil Poswal, SSP, Ganderbal.
The ceremony was also attended by various prominent persons of govt and civil institutions of the district.
The tournament is being organized by 5 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion (JAT), Ganderbal. A total of ten teams will be taking part in this tournament which is being played on a knock-out basis.
While encouraging the young players, the Chief guest during his address impressed upon them to utilize this golden opportunity not only to showcase their talents but also to imbibe some of the most important life lessons through the medium of sports.
He appreciated the efforts of the organising committee for conducting the event and was pleased to see the large numbers of an enthusiastic audience that had come to witness the inaugural ceremony.
The inaugural match was played between Baramula Blasters(19 Inf Div) and Green X(Victor Force) to mark the beginning of the tournament.
The players while lauding the efforts of the Army’s 5 RR unit said that such an event should be organized on a regular basis in order to bring out the hidden talent among the Kashmiri youth.
