SRINAGAR: The Panch and Sarpanch from South Kashmir particularly from Anantnag and Kulgam have been shifted to Pandit Colony Veesu till August 15.

The development comes after Bharatiya Janata Party Sarpanch came under attack by militants in the last 48 hours in South Kashmir.

Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said Sarpanch and Panchs from Anantnag and Kulgam were shifted to Pandit colony Veesu amid threats faced by security forces.

“We have been facing threats consistently from militant groups. What are we supposed and we were now told for a time being that we will be shifted to Pandit Colony Veesu till August 15”, said a Sarpanch.

He added that we have to work for the welfare the Union Territory. But consistent threats have taken a heavy toll on us and our family. All we want is security so that we can live peacefully.

It is pertinent to mention here that Sarpanch and Panch affiliated with political parties have been a soft target for militant and in the last 48 hours, two Sarpanch affiliated with BJP were attacked. In those two attacks, one succumbed to his injuries while other is battling for his life.

In between all this, several BJP workers have resigned from the party citing one reason or the other.

A police officer told Kashmir Despatch that definitely there were threats to Sarpanch and Panch and we had to do something for a time being we decided to shift them from their home to a place where they will be under protection. All this is permanently for one week or so the officer added.
