Ayesha suicide case: Husband gets 10 years in jail

Date:

Aarif Khan, the husband of Ayesha Banu Makrani, who had committed suicide in 2021, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Ahmedabad Sessions Court for abetment of suicide.

The Ahmedabad Sessions Court has sentenced Aarif Khan to 10 years in prison for the abetment of his wife’s suicide. Ayesha Banu Makrani committed suicide in February last year.

Makrani had been continuously harassed by her husband, Khan, due to which she took the fatal step. She recorded a video message that she sent to her family before she jumped into the river Sabarmati.

Ayesha had spoken to her husband before taking the extreme step. The Ahmedabad Police had accessed the 70-minute call recording in which her husband, Arif, can be heard telling Ayesha, “Go die and send me a video of your death”.

She had married Khan in 2018 but had moved back to her parents’ house in 2020 after alleged mental and physical harassment meted out to her by Khan. Even in 2019, a case was filed against him and his family for domestic violence and dowry harassment. Khan was finally arrested in March 2021.
