Party emerged victorious from 72 blocks in Kashmir: Altaf Thakur

Srinagar, Oct 25 : A day after the Block Development Council (BDC) polls were held in Jammu and Kashmir, the state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday organized a triumphant function at the party headquarters in Jawahar Nagar area of Srinagar. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the candidates who emerged victorious in the Block Development Council (BDC) polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

In the tweets, Modi said that it marks the dawn of a new and youthful leadership across the regions, which will make a monumental contribution to national progress in the times to come.

“I congratulate all those who have emerged victorious in the BDC polls across Jammu, Kashmir, Leh and Ladakh. This marks the dawn of a new and youthful leadership across the regions, which will make a monumental contribution to national progress in the times to come,”Modi tweeted.

“It would make India’s Parliament proud that due to their historic decision in August this year, the people of J&K have been able to exercise their democratic right with exceptional enthusiasm, as seen in the historic turnout of 98% that too without violence or disturbance,” Modi said in another tweet.

Meanwhile, the BJP State spokesperson and Incharge of BDC polls, Altaf Thakur was greeted by the party men for emerging victorious on many BDC blocks in the Valley.

According to the wire service –, several other party leaders were also present on the occasion.

Altaf Thakur while talking to the reporters, said that today’s function was held to celebrate the win in the polls, for which the results were also declared in the evening.

He said that the BJP has emerged as the single largest party in the BDC polls, adding that out of 128 blocks, BJP has emerged victorious from 72 blocks in Kashmir.

Asked about the boycott by the other political parties, Thakur said 520 candidates were in fray, which is testimony to the fact that the parties who announced to boycott the polls had filed proxy candidates, but they had to face the wrath as the voters cast their ballots for development.

For the first time, the BDC polls in Jammu and Kashmir were held on Thursday, while the results too were declared in the evening.

98.3 percent polling was recorded in the first-ever BDC polls in which 1065 candidates across Jammu and Kashmir were in the fray. The polls to elect chairpersons of BDCs were held in 310 blocks in the state and 1,065 candidates were in the fray, of whom 27 including 22 from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were elected unopposed.

Pertinently, majority of the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir including Congress, National Conference (NC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Conference (PC) and others boycotted the polls. (KNO)
