The fatality rate of Covid-19 contagion is continuously on the increase in Jammu and Kashmir with a consistent spike in positive cases from both rural and urban areas alike.
However, as the saying goes misfortunes never come alone and the same can be applied as a metaphor to the existing Covid emergency. The doctors around the globe are facing a new anomaly of black fungus that has even caused death to various ailing and recovering Covid patients.
The new studies unravel that patients who have a pre-condition of Diabetes Mellitus, Cancer and Kidney dysfunction are prone to get infected with Black Fungus also known as Mucormycosis.
The patients suffering with this fungal infection exhibit symptoms of a stuffy and bleeding nose, burning sensation in the eyes, loss of vision and may even result in death. In certain cases, the doctors had to remove the eyes of patients in order to stop its spread to the brain tissue.
The Mucormycosis fungal infection can be easily treated under a normal circumstance but when a patient is already recovering or suffering from Covid-19 virus catches this infection, the situation can turn a little more than odd. The immune system remains in shambles while fighting the corona virus and in the meantime the attack of black fungus causes a carnage over the defense mechanism and thus the body loses its fight with multiple invaders.
The recent research has also shown that the patients on steroids are more prone to get infected with the Black Fungus infection which puts use of Dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, under question mark.
These new revelations are worrisome and exceptionally intriguing especially for the people of J&K wherein there are high numbers of diabetic and kidney dysfunction patients. The situation if not handled with meticulous upkeep may worsen within no time. The alarm is sounded while our prep shall decide the future course of the events under this contagion
