New Democratic Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh, in a statement reported by ANI, has claimed that Canadian Sikhs are being “stalked by fear” amidst the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada over the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Singh urged the Canadian government to impose diplomatic sanctions against India, specifically targeting the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) network in Canada.
Singh expressed strong support for the expulsion of Indian diplomats and further called for punitive measures, including a ban on the RSS and serious repercussions for any individuals involved in organized criminal activities linked to Indian officials. He cited the recent findings of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that highlighted alleged connections between Indian agents and violent criminal activity on Canadian soil.
The RCMP’s statement outlined concerns over violent extremism, potential interference in democratic processes, and threats to public safety, which Singh believes warrant immediate action from the Canadian government. He emphasized the need for accountability, citing credible evidence tying Indian officials to the Nijjar case.
In response, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats, while India retaliated by expelling Canadian diplomats, accusing Canada of “baseless targeting” of its officials. The diplomatic rift continues to escalate with ongoing investigations and counter-allegations.
