Srinagar, June 19: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday apprehended two employees of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a complainant in exchange for processing official work.
According to officials, the accused were caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount during a trap operation conducted by the CBI following a complaint alleging corruption within the civic body.
The anti-corruption agency also carried out searches at multiple locations linked to the accused, including the residence of the in-charge Superintending Engineer of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation. Officials said the raids were aimed at gathering further evidence related to the case.
Sources said the complainant had approached the CBI after alleging that SMC officials had sought illegal gratification for clearing files and facilitating official procedures. After verifying the complaint, the agency registered a case and laid a trap that led to the arrest of the two employees.
The identities of the accused and the exact amount involved in the bribery case were not immediately disclosed by the investigating agency.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain the involvement of other officials and uncover any wider corruption network within the municipal body, officials said.
