Clean Air Survey-2026 report is alarming, MLAs must debate this in the upcoming session of Assembly
Srinagar, Sep 13: Jammu & Kashmir Climate Action Group-JKCAG has appealed all the legislators (MLAs) to raise issue pertaining to National Clean Air Survey 2026 ( Swachh Vayu Survekshan) which has ranked Srinagar at 26th place among 39 cities of India with 10 lakh population or more.
“The situation is very much alarming and authorities must take stringent measures to tackle growing air pollution in J&K especially Srinagar. Authorities must also fix responsibilities to know how the graph on air pollution in Srinagar came down from rank 4th to 26th in just 3 years ” said Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat Chairman J&K Climate Action Group
“As per 2023 Swachh Vayu Survekshan Srinagar city was at rank 4th and was counted among the country’s top-performing cities vis a vis air pollution but the situation has degraded so much that we came down to 26th rank and this needs an in-depth inquiry and probe. The municipal solid waste is being burnt openly by sanitation staff across J&K and even Srinagar, dust control mechanism is not in place, outside J&K vehicles have a mushroom growth , illegal cement plants, stone crushers are running openly , construction and demolition waste management system is not in place, no public awareness is done on air pollution by authorities and all these things contribute for air pollution in Srinagar and other districts of J&K. Last year the Air Quality Index -AQI touched almost 300 and this autumn and early winter would be terrible. Govt has to act and MLAs must put pressure on authorities “ reads the statement
The latest air quality survey report which was out recently is alarming as Srinagar behind Delhi vis a vis air quality. Delhi has for long made headlines with toxic winter smog and features among India’s most persistent air-pollution. Delhi secured the 21st rank with 172 points and Srinagar scored 162.6 points and is now at 26th among cities with a population of over 10 lakh. According to the survey Lucknow ranks number 1 followed by Indore, Jabalpur, and Bhopal.
The Swachh Vayu Survekshan – Clean Air Survey was initiated in 2023 by Govt of India Ministry of Environment Forest Climate Change -MoEFCC under its National Clean Air Programme-NCAP and the survey is conducted by Central Pollution Control Board-CPCB New Delhi
