Climate Crisis: Where have the rains gone in the valley?

Date:

The months of March & April in Kashmir division have always been marked busy with rain and were usually clad with murky dark clouds but not this year. The climate change has finally knocked our doors.

After decades the region is witnessing an unprecedented dry weather during this part of the year which has enough potential to adversely affect different life forms. While tourists may love the warmth of these months for now but the snow clad mountains are loosing the ice at an alarming rate which can eventually push for impending drought.

The rainfall has been the lowest ever recorded in the recent past that has on one hand baffled the environmental scientists but also created a state of hysteria for farmer and orchadist who are making themselves ready for a dry summer.

In Jammu, the mercury levels had already touched an all time high in more than three decades while as in Kashmir valley the night temperature has pecefully surpassed the pervious records. This all tends to exhibit that climate change has stared to show its colours in the regions of J&K for which comprehensive and coordinated efforts by the government and local inhabitants is a must.

The hovering danger of a seemingly dry weather shall incur huge losses on the agriculture and horticulture industry of the valley. Not only this the flash floods caused by havoc wreaking rains in the mid summers also created flood like situation in various area like Bemina and others which at one point of time served as natural flood channels.

If we try to dig a little deeper, it shall come to the surface that this wrath is self inflicted upon humans who in the lust of gaining more profits and urban advancements destroyed mother nature throught unhindered exploitation of it resources. Now the nature has hit back and we can only witness the coming doom.
