New Delhi, Jul 6:— Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare has been elected chairperson of the ninth session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Consumer Protection Law and Policy of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the government said on Monday.
Khare, a 1992-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, was elected to head the three-day meeting being held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva from July 6 to 8, an official statement said.
The session will deliberate on the implementation of the United Nations Guidelines for Consumer Protection by member states and other stakeholders, besides reviewing the UNCTAD World Consumer Protection Map, it said.
According to the statement, the meeting will also witness the launch of the United Nations Principles for Consumer Product Safety.
Delegates will discuss enforcement of consumer protection laws in global markets, with a focus on digital tools and cross-border challenges, as well as innovation in consumer information and education to promote sustainable consumption.
The Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Consumer Protection Law and Policy serves as a global forum for member states to exchange experiences and strengthen international cooperation on consumer protection issues, the statement said.
