Srinagar, July 22: Head Constable Ashiq Hussain of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, who was killed in a terrorist attack in Anantnag on Wednesday, had himself been appointed under the SRO-43 rehabilitation policy after his father was killed by militants years ago.
According to reports, Ashiq Hussain was on duty providing security for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra when terrorists opened fire on a police party at Lal Chowk in Anantnag around 12:30 pm. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, where doctors declared him dead. Security forces later launched a massive search operation to trace the attackers.
Ashiq Hussain’s appointment in the police force came under SRO-43, a Jammu and Kashmir government policy that provides compassionate government employment to the next of kin of civilians or government employees killed in militancy-related incidents.
His death has left behind a grieving family, including his wife and three children, once again depriving the family of its sole breadwinner. The tragedy highlights the continuing human cost of militancy, particularly for families that have already suffered losses due to violence.
The attack is the first militant strike targeting security personnel in the Kashmir Valley this year, and comes during the ongoing annual Amarnath Yatra, prompting heightened security across the region.
