Councilors feel ‘betrayed, threat to resign en masse

Srinagar, April 3 : The recent elected presidents and councilors of Municipal Committees across the Jammu and Kashmir have threatened to resign if their pending salary was not released forthwith. 

Talking to GNS, Rayees Ahmad Lone President Municipal Committee Pahalgam said that he along with seven councilors of the municipal committee are without the salary since they have been elected.

“More than five months have passed since we took the oath but our salary has not been released,” Rayees said.

He said that they fought elections under difficult circumstances for the welfare of the people. “The situation was very tense and we fought the elections after the assurances by the government but we have been betrayed,” he said, adding, “We are unable to manage over daily affairs and are unable to address day to day issues facing the people.” 

He said that funds are also not been provided to the municipal committees so that they can discharge their mandate.

Some councilors from Anantnag and Kupwara also confirmed that they along with other councilors have decided to resign en masse if their salaries are not released. 

A councilor from Srinagar Municipal Corporation said that while they are paid salary regularly after their election but required funds to carry out their mandate have not been provided to them. 

“We are here to carry out basic works in our wards but once we have no funds to discharge those basic amenities to the people, what are we here for?” he asked. 

“Government also offered to provide better accommodation and other amenities to us but has not been translated on ground,” he said, adding, “under these circumstances, we have no option but to reign,” he added. (GNS)
