On Friday afternoon, two minor girls along with their aunt were held hostage by two burglars in the Moominabad area of Batamaloo. The girls were stabbed with a sharp knife when one among them raised her voice to seek help from the neighbours.
In a hysterical move to flee, one of the burglars was caught by the local residents while the second was nabbed by police hours later.
This housebreaking happened in broad daylight at a place that has a considerable pedestrian footfall. The incident is highly concerning as it reveals the changing crime trends in our society.
Though persisting lockdowns and economic stagnation might have created problems for various sections of the society, resorting to criminal activities is only tarnishing our social image. These acts of belligerence cannot be justified in any civilized society.
The recent acid attack on a 24-year-old girl has also received an overwhelming condemnation from all quarters of the society and even monetary aid has been provided to the victim’s family for treatment. But this abyss seems to be going deeper with every passing day.
The intellectuals along with social and religious leaders need to come together and collectively put efforts for the restoration of the social balance that has been disturbed by such events. They need to reassure that our collective consciousness is still alive and inclined towards good.
It must be made clear that we have to fight such vicious forces and exterminate the evil that has lately poisoned the minds of certain people who regrettably resort to criminal acts in the end. A social rectification is imperative otherwise hope shall be lost.
