‘He caused delay in setting up of Standing Committees’

SRINAGAR, May 31: Chairperson of Srinagar District Development Council (DDC) Aftab Malik on Wednesday blamed Aijaz Hussain Rather, a DDC member for ‘using power as a tool to harass general public’. Malik appealed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to allow him to suspend the member from the Srinagar council for at least six months.

Talking to Kashmir Despatch, Malik said, that Rather had become an arrogant person ever-since he was elected to the DDC Srinagar. He abused power and harassed people under the garb of his position.

“I request the Hon’ble governor that Rather be suspended from the council,” Malik remarked while talking to the Kashmir Despatch. He further added that almost every district established a Standing Committee but only the district Srinagar is lagging behind for frivolous reasons ‘mostly created’ by Rather.

“It was only because Rather would create hurdles. He wanted to take control over everything and would create impediments whenever I tried to call a meeting for the establishment of the standing committees.”

Malik also said that, “I request the SSP Srinagar to review the security of DDC members. Rather would enjoy double the security made available to him. Given the misuse of power and position, it should be withdrawn from him, forthwith,” he said.

Sources told Kashmir Despatch that Rather was detained by police but came out on bail. He later addressed a press briefing.

A police statement issued here read, “On the basis of complaint lodged by Nazim Hussain Bhat and Imad Ali Mir, FIR no 51/2023 u/s 323,341 of IPC dated 30/05/2023 registered in Panthachowk PS against DDC member Aijaz Hussain Rather on offences of wrongful restraint and voluntarily causing hurt” tweeted police.
