Srinagar, May 20: Cyber Police Kashmir, Srinagar, has intensified its action to curb the online crimes against women.
An official told that Cyber Police Kashmir is all set to find the suspects responsible for online frauds and violence against women, using modern technology.
The official said that in some cases, men are morphing images and threatening women. “These are among some cases where many women don’t want to make official complaints, fearing stigma”.
However, the SP Cyber police Kashmir Tahir Ashraf encouraged cyber-crime victims to come forward and assured identities of victims would remain confidential.
He said amid COVID19, people don’t need to visit Police station but can file online complaints on www.cybercrime.gov.in
The SP said that Cyber Police is taking note of complaints where persons have assumed fake identities with malicious intention to cheat people.
Quoting section 66D of Information Technology Act, he said crime through the use of computer or otherwise cybercrime, whereby a person assumes fake identity with a malafide intention to deceive another, is punishable with three years imprisonment and fine upto one lakh rupees.
He informed this crime also includes matters related to fake Facebook ID, fake social media profiles or unauthorized access to account of another person by faking identity, with an intention to cheat.
The complaints of such nature have been received by Cyber Police through its channels and it has been seen that people are reluctant in filing complaints. “Some post their complaints on Facebook and Twitter and that is not prescribed rule for filing complaints. They want us to handle things unofficially,” he said.
Assuring all kind of help to victims, he said that the Cyber Crime Police Station of J&K Police has recovered lakhs of rupees from hackers who had targeted several people while posing as bank officials and owners of online business centers.
He said as technology improves and more people have disdained cash and wallets for digital payments, the number of conventional crimes has plummeted even as online crimes have risen.
He added that due to pandemic, the process of investigation and response to the complaints has hampered “but still the Cyber Police team is working hard to come to the expectations of neitizens.”
He appealed people to be aware of scammer’s tricks who have not spared any form of online transaction, be it digital wallet payments, online shopping, card vishing, insurance renewal, passport applications or know your customer verifications.
“We have enhanced ability and capacity at Cyber Police Station to fight these offences more effectively and accurately,” he assured people.
