Srinagar, Mar 17 ; The Director General of Police, R. R. Swain, has highlighted significant changes following the abrogation of Article 370 in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
In an interview with a national TV channel as per Kashmir Despatch, DGP Swain emphasized that the police are now able to go beyond neutralizing militants to heavily targeting the supply chain of terrorism.
Previously, when terrorist incidents occurred, investigations did not properly address the families that provided shelter to militants or their motivations for joining extremist groups.
With the removal of Article 370, the police can now thoroughly investigate factors such as how militants are sheltered in mosques and who influences their decision to join militant ranks.
DGP Swain pointed out that around 20,000 young individuals from poor families, many of whom had minimal education, lost their lives in the conflict.
He explained that for them, militancy seemed like a shortcut to glory. Those who pursued education and hard work to achieve success were overshadowed by the glorification of militancy. However, following the abrogation of Article 370, stringent measures have been implemented to tighten the noose around those who mislead youth to join militancy.
When questioned about the impact on politicians who previously supported terrorism, DGP Swain acknowledged that efforts to stop terrorism and violence had been lacking. However, after the abrogation of Article 370, serious efforts were made to curb terrorism by targeting its supply network, terror financing, and the glorification of terrorism. This has led to an improved environment and a sense of happiness among the people.
Regarding the concept of “healing touch,” DGP Swain avoided political discussions but reaffirmed his duty to provide a secure environment during elections.
He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between victims and perpetrators. Confusing the two would undermine the trust of the community, citizens, and the police force, impacting peace and security.
When asked about Yaeen Malik, the DGP stressed the need for clarity in defining militants and martyrs. The confusion caused by ambiguous statements from Indian representatives undermines the morale of law enforcement agencies. He questioned the existence of doubt about Jammu and Kashmir being an integral part of India.
In response to Mehbooba Mufti’s statement suggesting that no one would hold the tricolor flag after the abrogation of Article 370, DGP Swain mentioned that the demand to join the police force has increased significantly. This highlights the high spirit and patriotism among the people in the union territory.
Looking ahead to the Lok Sabha elections, the DGP outlined the police’s three goals: to provide a free, fearless, and peaceful environment for individuals to participate in the democratic process.
This includes encouraging individuals to contest elections, ensuring the public can cast their votes without fear, and maintaining overall peace in the region.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police are fully committed to achieving these goals.
