SRINAGAR, Oct 19: Dr Nisar ul Hassan, President of the Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) and an influenza expert, said on Wednesday that dried vegetables (Hokh Suen) are harmful to one’s health.

Dr Nisar-ul-Hassan, talking with the Kashmir Despatch Correspondent, said that people should avoid eating sun-dried vegetables, and fruits, as they carry the risk of contamination, which can cause various diseases.

According to Dr. Nisar-ul-Hassan, people used to eat dried vegetables (Hokh Suen) earlier because they didn’t have access to fresh vegetables and had to rely on dried vegetables.

He said it has been proven that keeping fresh vegetables or fruits for a long time and then eating them is not good for health and is very harmful. It is pertinent to mention here that people dry many varieties of vegetables and fruits in the summer so that they can consume them during the winter.

The DAK president stated that as soon as winter begins in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, the diseases begin, as this is a very cold place, and that people must be cautious because COVID may reappear in the winter as it is a favourable environment for it. He said the best way to prevent the viruses is to go for booster doses, and those who have not taken it yet should go immediately before winter sets it off.

The DAK president stated that the elderly are more likely to suffer from heart attacks, strokes, and hypertension during the winter, adding that we cannot control the weather and those suffering from hypertension should take medications.

The president appealed to the elderly not to come out of their homes in winter, especially in the wee hours for any walk, because of the cold they are becoming victims of heart attacks.

He said if they are having important work to come out, then they should wear extra warm clothes to protect themselves.

He appealed to elderly people to have a healthy diet (enough fruits, vegetables, cut down on their fats, oily things, and excess salt) so they can easily tackle all diseases in the winter.
