Baramulla, Feb 27: There has been a decrease in drug-related cases and suicides in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district compared to last year’s statistics, according to a senior police officer.

Senior Superintendent of Police Baramulla, Gurinderpal Singh, speaking on the sidelines of a skiing competition organized by the Range Police Headquarters under the Civic Action Program, stated that statistically, this year’s cases of drug-related incidents and suicides have significantly decreased compared to last year.

He explained that many individuals were arrested last year in connection with drug cases, and heavy action was taken against those dealing drugs or supplying them, which has improved the drug scenario this year in comparison to the previous year.

The officer described drug addicts as “victims” and reassured that the J&K Police, along with the district administration, is committed to their rehabilitation.

“We have drug de-addiction centers and various support systems in place,” he stated.

He emphasized that the issue of drug addiction is not insurmountable and appealed to the youth and those involved with drugs to come forward. He mentioned that the police and the administration have drug de-addiction centers designed to support them in achieving a bright and successful future.

Speaking on youth development, SSP Baramulla emphasized the critical importance of creating pathways for young people to realize their potential. He acknowledged the multitude of government programs designed to nurture and support talented individuals, specifically tailored to empower youth with the necessary skills and resources to succeed in various fields, from entrepreneurship to education and beyond.

However, SSP Baramulla highlighted a significant obstacle that many young people face: an “information gap.” This gap refers to the lack of awareness and accessibility regarding the initiatives available to them. He noted that, despite the valuable programs established by the government, many talented individuals remain unaware of these opportunities due to inadequate dissemination of information, bureaucratic red tape, or lack of effective communication strategies.

He added that to combat this challenge, we urged students and young people to take proactive steps in seeking out information about the platforms available to them. He also encouraged the youth to actively research and engage with local authorities, educational institutions, and community organizations to learn about skills development programs, scholarships, internships, and vocational training opportunities.

SSP Baramulla also called upon educational institutions and community leaders to play a pivotal role in bridging this information gap. He suggested that schools and colleges could hold awareness sessions, workshops, and informational fairs to inform students about the various initiatives designed to advance their skills. He emphasized the importance of creating an environment where young individuals feel encouraged and supported in their pursuit of development and success.
