Encroached Irrigation Canals in Srinagar

Date:

The slow progress on the removal of encroached irrigation canals in Srinagar is a matter of great concern. These canals play a vital role in the irrigation of the agricultural land, which is the backbone of the economy in Kashmir. However, the encroachment of these canals has not only reduced their capacity to irrigate the land but has also caused damage to the ecology of the area.

The problem of encroachment of canals in Srinagar is not a new one. Despite several attempts by the government and concerned authorities to remove the encroachments, the progress has been painfully slow. The lack of political will and bureaucratic red tape are some of the reasons for this slow progress.

The encroachment of canals is not only illegal but also leads to environmental degradation. The canal beds get filled with garbage, and the stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other disease-carrying insects. The water also gets contaminated, affecting the health of the people who depend on it for their livelihood.

Moreover, the encroachment of canals has also resulted in the loss of agricultural land. The reduced water supply has led to a decrease in the productivity of the land, affecting the livelihood of farmers who depend on it for their sustenance.

It is high time that the government and concerned authorities take concrete steps to remove the encroachments from the canals in Srinagar. The first step in this direction should be the identification of all encroachments and their immediate removal.

There should be strict enforcement of laws and regulations to prevent any further encroachment on the canal land. The authorities should also take steps to ensure that the canals are maintained properly, and their capacity is restored to ensure the efficient irrigation of agricultural land.

The slow progress on the removal of encroached irrigation canals in Srinagar is a matter of great concern. The government and concerned authorities must take immediate action to remove the encroachments and restore the capacity of the canals to ensure the efficient irrigation of agricultural land. This is not only essential for the livelihood of farmers but also for the preservation of the environment in the city.
