SRINAGAR, Mar 20: Former Gurez MLA and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Faqeer Mohammad Khan was found dead at his government-allocated residence in Tulsi Bagh, Srinagar, on Thursday, in what appears to be a case of suicide. The incident has sent shockwaves through political and social circles in Jammu and Kashmir.
Police Launch Investigation
An official said Khan allegedly shot himself inside his official quarters, prompting authorities to alert the police. A team from Police Station Shergarhi arrived at the scene immediately.
“The exact reason behind this unfortunate step is yet to be ascertained. A case has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS), and a detailed investigation has been initiated,” said a senior police officer. The officer added that while initial findings suggest suicide, all possible angles are being examined.
Srinagar Police, in an official statement, confirmed that a firearm discharge incident occurred at the Tulsi Bagh residence, resulting in Khan’s death.
Electoral Setback and Possible Distress
Faqeer Mohammad Khan had contested the 2024 Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections from the Gurez constituency but lost to National Conference (NC) leader and former minister Nazir Ahmad Khan. The defeat was seen as a significant blow to Khan, who had been deeply involved in grassroots politics and had a loyal support base in Gurez.
“He was a people’s leader and worked tirelessly for the development of Gurez. We are unable to believe he is gone,” said one of his grieving supporters who gathered outside his residence.

As news of his death spread, Khan’s family members and relatives were inconsolable. Mourners thronged his residence, where scenes of grief unfolded. Supporters, still in shock, gathered in large numbers, struggling to come to terms with the tragic news.

Political leaders from across the spectrum expressed deep sorrow over Khan’s untimely demise.
Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, acknowledged Khan’s contributions and stated, “Faqeer Mohammad Khan’s role in the development of Gurez has been immense. He touched and improved thousands of lives. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, and supporters. May his soul rest in peace.”
Similarly, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his grief, saying, “Deeply saddened by the passing of former legislator Faqeer Mohammad Khan. He was a true grassroots leader who worked tirelessly for his people. My heartfelt condolences to his family. May his soul rest in peace.”
In a mark of respect, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly observed a two-minute silence to honor Khan’s legacy.

While preliminary reports suggest suicide, authorities have assured a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to Khan’s death. Police officials are examining all possible angles, including political pressure and personal distress, to get to the bottom of the incident.
