SRINAGAR, Oct 18: Trauma has a profound impact on an individual’s emotional and physical well-being and often leads to conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), anxiety and depression if not addressed properly, experts warn.
Mental health professionals said that while trauma and its effects can be overwhelming, individuals can heal and regain a sense of control with appropriate support and intervention.
Mansoor Ahmad, a psychiatrist at DHSK, explained that trauma is a psychological response to deeply distressing or disturbing events that overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope. “The effects of trauma can vary widely depending on the nature of the incident, often leading to feelings of shock, disbelief, anger, fear and sadness, as well as mood swings, irritability, and emotional numbness,” he said. “Trauma can result in behavioural changes, physical symptoms and cognitive effects, with PTSD being triggered by experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event.”
Dr Mushtaq, another mental health expert, outlined symptoms of PTSD, which include intrusive thoughts, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood and heightened arousal. He said PTSD can impair daily functioning, affecting relationships, work and overall quality of life.
“PTSD can lead to emotional numbness, hypervigilance, substance abuse and other mental health issues,” Dr. Mushtaq added. Experts stressed the importance of addressing trauma early to prevent the development of PTSD and other long-term effects.
They urge those facing such challenges to seek professional help, saying that connecting with friends, family, or support groups can provide comfort and facilitate emotional expression.
“Practising mindfulness and relaxation techniques, maintaining a consistent daily routine and reducing exposure to triggers—such as news stories or environments related to the traumatic event—can help manage symptoms during the early stages of recovery,” they said—(KNO)
