From Kashmir to Ladakh: A Summer of Shifting Journeys

Date:

With Valley’s Tourist Hotspots Off-Limits, Locals Flock to Ladakh’s Majestic Landscapes for Adventure and Solitude

Suhail Khan

Srinagar, June 28: With many of Kashmir’s popular tourist spots currently inaccessible due to heightened security concerns, Ladakh has become the preferred summer destination for locals seeking adventure and tranquility.

For many, Ladakh is more than just a destination—it’s an experience. “Ladakh isn’t just a place; it’s an emotion. When familiar routes are closed, its majestic landscapes offer the perfect retreat,” shared a group of enthusiastic travelers with Kashmir Despatch.

Bilal Dar, a travel filmmaker known for documenting Kashmir’s border regions, expressed frustration over this year’s restrictions. “Security measures have made several areas off-limits, disrupting travel plans for both tourists and residents. With fewer options, families are heading to Ladakh to beat the heat and unwind,” he said.

As schools and colleges in Kashmir break for summer vacation, many young travelers are opting for short trips. “When local destinations are out of reach, Ladakh is the obvious alternative,”Bilal added. He is currently guiding a 15-member group through Ladakh, capturing stunning visuals for travel content.

Faisal Maqbool, part of the same group, described the trip as unforgettable. “Ladakh offers the ideal blend of adventure and relaxation. The scenic routes and vast landscapes make every moment special,” he told Kashmir Despatch.

“While Kashmir remains breathtaking, the current restrictions make Ladakh the top choice this season,” Faisal emphasized.

Ladakh’s serene monasteries and crystal-clear lakes offer a spiritual retreat that’s hard to find elsewhere. With Kashmir’s usual hotspots out of reach, Ladakh has become our sanctuary,” said Aqib War, a university student traveling with friends.

The thrill of biking through Ladakh’s rugged terrain is unmatched. This summer, it’s not just an adventure—it’s the only escape for many of us,” remarked Faisal War, an adventure enthusiast and biker.

Tourism shifts with circumstances, and right now, Ladakh is where memories are being made. The restrictions in Kashmir have only deepened our appreciation for this majestic landscape,” stated travel blogger Adnan Dar.

This summer has seen a surge in Kashmiri travelers—families, friends, and tour groups—heading to Ladakh after recent Indo-Pak tensions limited access to key valley attractions.

Spanning 97,000 sq. km between the Karakoram and Himalayan ranges, Ladakh mesmerizes visitors with its snow-capped peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and sprawling desert valleys. The region’s deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist culture is evident in its ancient monasteries, stupas, and vibrant festivals at Thiksey, Hemis, Alchi, Lamayuru, and Spituk.

Leh, the capital, sits at 11,480 feet along the Indus River. Once a vital Silk Route hub, it blends history and culture, with landmarks like the Shey Palace adding to its allure.

“Ladakh’s grandeur is unparalleled—it’s a dream for nature lovers and thrill-seekers,” Bilal remarked. With its open roads and serene vibe, Ladakh has indeed become the ultimate summer getaway for Kashmiris.

Meanwhile, recent data from the Tourism Department reveals a worrying slump in Kashmir’s tourism sector. While May saw stagnant numbers, June recorded a drastic 60% drop in arrivals. Industry experts attribute this decline to security concerns, global events, and inadequate promotion.

In contrast, Ladakh experienced an 80% surge in tourist arrivals in April 2025 compared to the previous year. However, May saw only marginal growth, and June witnessed a steep 60% decline, signaling an unpredictable season.

From January to June 25, 2025, Ladakh welcomed 127,437 tourists—a notable drop from the 376,386 visitors recorded in all of 2024.

The recent deadly attack in Baisaran meadows, near Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, dealt a severe blow to Kashmir’s tourism. The incident triggered mass cancellations, with hoteliers reporting over 95% of bookings being called off in the following months.

While tourism is slowly recovering, the majority of visitors in Pahalgam are now locals, highlighting the lingering impact of the tragedy.
