Ganderbal, June 16: Once a pristine and picturesque tourist destination, Wayil is now grappling with an alarming rise in littering. Polythene bags, plastic wrappers, and other waste materials are strewn across the area, tarnishing its natural beauty.
Nestled amidst majestic mountains and along the gushing Sindh Nallah, Wayil has long been a peaceful retreat, particularly popular among local tourists from across Kashmir. However, the surge in visitors has led to a troubling trend of irresponsible waste disposal.
Since Wayil does not fall under any municipal jurisdiction, there is no proper waste collection infrastructure in place. This has exacerbated the problem, leaving no systematic means for garbage disposal.
A local resident told Kashmir Despatch, “Wayil is a beautiful offbeat destination. The banks of the Sindh River provide a perfect spot to relax, but the careless behavior of some visitors, who litter polythene and other waste, is ruining it.” The community has urged tourists to act responsibly and avoid littering.
Although the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) aims to ensure cleanliness in rural public spaces, no visible measures have been implemented in Wayil so far.
Locals are now appealing to the concerned authorities to take action. They demand proper awareness campaigns, waste disposal facilities, and regular cleanliness drives to preserve Wayil’s natural charm.
