Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Surgery Society of J&K Propels Patient Care to New Heights

SRINAGAR, Mar 9: Jammu & Kashmir* – The eminent GI and HPB surgeons of the state convened in a landmark meeting at the prestigious Hotel The Kabo Auditorium, dedicated to advancing patient care standards. 

In a groundbreaking academic presentation, the Surgical Gastroenterology department of SKIMS showcased their remarkable experience with 60 pancreaticoduodenectomies conducted over a span of two years. Led by Chief of GI HPB & Liver Transplant Surgery, Prof. Sadaf Ali, the department reported zero in-hospital mortalities, surpassing global standards where mortality rates can reach up to 5%. Prof. Sadaf Ali attributed these stellar outcomes to the collaborative efforts of the team and the established critical care pathway within the department.

Dr. Nisar Hamdani, Head of the GI and HPB Surgery Department at Super Speciality Hospital, shared his journey of building the department from scratch into one of the nation’s premier service units within a short period. The faculty unanimously pledged to continue their commitment to patient care and endeavor to establish a liver transplant facility in Jammu and Kashmir.

In an interim election, Prof. Sadaf Ali was elected as the Chairperson of the association, while Dr. Nisar Ahmad Hamdani was appointed as the General Secretary. Other key executives include Dr. Vikrant representing Jammu, and Dr. M. Younis Bhat and Dr. Suhail Khuroo, who will jointly oversee the Secretary Scientific Committee. Dr. Feroz Ahmad Khan and Khalid Bashir will share executive responsibilities, currently serving in Gandebal and Anantnag, respectively.

Prof. Sadaf Ali emphasized how the GI and HPB department at SKIMS has become a beacon of learning, attracting students from across the nation for their MCH programs, thereby disseminating knowledge to smaller towns in Jammu and Kashmir as well as the wider country.

Dr. Nisar concluded the meeting by outlining the organization’s future initiatives. Dr. Arshad Qadiri, Dr. Mujtaba, Dr. Mansoor, Dr. Humza Wani, and other emerging GI and HPB Surgeons from the UT participated fervently, reflecting the collective enthusiasm and dedication towards advancing patient care in the region.
