New Delhi, June 30: General Dhiraj Seth on Tuesday assumed charge as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi, who retired after more than four decades of distinguished service in the Indian Army.
Prior to his appointment as Army Chief, General Seth served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff. Commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986, he brings nearly four decades of operational, strategic and administrative experience to the country’s highest military post.
General Seth has held several key command appointments during his career, including commanding the South Western Command, Southern Command and the XXI Strike Corps. He has also served in important staff and instructional roles and attended advanced military courses in India, France and the United States.
His appointment comes at a time when the Indian Army is focusing on force modernisation, indigenous defence production, technological transformation, and enhanced preparedness along the country’s borders. Defence experts expect his tenure to continue efforts towards strengthening combat readiness, integrating advanced technologies and promoting self-reliance in defence manufacturing.
General Seth has been awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM) and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in recognition of his distinguished military service.
