GANDHINAGAR, Sept 28: Gift Nifty, the flagship international derivatives platform operated by NSE International Exchange (NSE IX) at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), has set a series of new trading records, registering an all-time high single-day turnover of US$23.67 billion, equivalent to approximately Rs 2,26,987 crore, on September 25, 2026.
The record trading activity underscores the rapid expansion of Gift Nifty as an international financial-market platform and highlights the growing participation and liquidity being generated at GIFT International
Financial Services Centre (IFSC).
Alongside the record turnover, Gift Nifty recorded its highest-ever single-day trading volume of 512,023 contracts. Open interest also climbed to a new peak of US$21.87 billion, or approximately Rs 2,09,679 crore, with 471,287 contracts recorded on the same day.
The latest performance represents a significant expansion in activity on the platform and marks a fresh milestone for the international derivatives market being developed at GIFT City.
The September 25 record surpassed Gift Nifty’s previous single-day turnover high of US$23.48 billion, achieved on February 20, 2026. The new open-interest record also exceeded the previous peak of US$21.56 billion, recorded on June 25, 2026.
Trading activity accelerates
Gift Nifty’s latest numbers reflect a broader increase in trading activity since the commencement of its full-scale operations on July 3, 2023.
From the beginning of full-scale operations through September 25, 2026, Gift Nifty has recorded cumulative trading volume of more than 76.19 million contracts, generating cumulative turnover of approximately US$3.52 trillion.
The sustained growth in volumes and open interest indicates the increasing scale of activity on the platform and the expanding role of GIFT City’s international financial infrastructure in facilitating access to global markets.
The latest record also comes at a time when India’s international financial centre is seeking to deepen its position as a hub for cross-border financial services, international trading and investment-related activities.
A major milestone for GIFT City
Gift Nifty is operated through NSE IX, the international exchange established at GIFT City. NSE IX was set up on June 5, 2017 and is recognised by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA).
The exchange provides a platform for a diversified range of financial products, including single-stock derivatives, index derivatives, currency derivatives, depository receipts and global stocks.
Its product basket also includes equity shares, SPACs, REITs, InvITs, depository receipts, debt securities and ESG debt securities under the applicable regulatory framework governing India’s International Financial Services Centre.
The growth of Gift Nifty has been closely watched as part of the development of GIFT City into an international financial hub capable of attracting global market participants and facilitating round-the-clock and cross-border financial activity.
Global market access from India
One of the key features of Gift Nifty is its international-market orientation. The platform provides global investors and market participants with an avenue to access Indian equity-linked products through the international financial services framework established at GIFT City.
The scale of the latest trading session demonstrates the depth that the market has developed since its transition to full-scale operations.
A single-day turnover of US$23.67 billion, combined with more than half a million contracts traded, represents a substantial concentration of trading activity on the platform. The simultaneous record in open interest further indicates the scale of positions outstanding across the market.
For India’s financial-services ecosystem, the continued expansion of trading at GIFT City is also significant because international exchanges located within the IFSC are intended to provide a domestic base for financial activities that have traditionally been conducted through overseas financial centres.
From launch to record volumes
Gift Nifty’s journey from the start of full-scale operations in July 2023 to more than 76.19 million cumulative contracts represents a rapid expansion in market activity.
The cumulative turnover of US$3.52 trillion recorded by September 25 provides an indication of the scale reached by the platform in just over three years of full-scale operations.
The successive records in turnover, volume and open interest also point to an evolving market structure in which liquidity has continued to deepen.
The latest record is particularly notable because the previous turnover peak itself had been established only a few months earlier. The rise from US$23.48 billion in February to US$23.67 billion in September demonstrates that record levels are being reached at relatively short intervals.
NSE IX expands international product ecosystem
NSE IX has positioned itself as a multi-asset international exchange within GIFT City, offering products designed to cater to both Indian and international market participants.
The exchange has received exemptions from the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission under Regulation 30.10 and SEC class relief under specified provisions, enabling eligible US customers to participate in derivative contracts listed on NSE IX, subject to the applicable regulatory conditions.
This international regulatory framework forms part of the wider effort to integrate GIFT City’s financial ecosystem with global markets.
The development of products ranging from equity and index derivatives to currency derivatives, global stocks and other securities is aimed at creating a broader marketplace within India’s international financial centre.
Record signals growing scale of international financial centre
The latest Gift Nifty milestone comes against the backdrop of India’s continuing efforts to establish GIFT City as a globally competitive financial-services centre.
The increasing trading volumes on NSE IX provide one measurable indicator of the activity being generated within the IFSC. For market participants, higher volumes can contribute to greater liquidity and facilitate larger-scale participation, while sustained open interest reflects the level of positions being maintained in the market.
The September 25 session therefore stands out not only for its headline turnover figure but also for the simultaneous records in contracts traded and open interest.
With US$23.67 billion in single-day turnover, 512,023 contracts in volume and US$21.87 billion in open interest, Gift Nifty has established a new benchmark for its trading activity.
The record-setting session adds another significant chapter to the development of NSE IX and reinforces the expanding scale of India’s international financial-market infrastructure at GIFT City.
