SRINAGAR, Oct 1: Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar is mourning the demise of Prof. (Dr.) Mohammad Yousuf Bhat, former Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine, who passed away on October 1, 2026.
Prof. Bhat’s death has evoked grief across the medical fraternity, particularly among his former colleagues, students, postgraduate trainees and patients who had come to know him during his long and distinguished association with GMC Srinagar.
An astute physician, accomplished academician, dedicated teacher and compassionate clinician, Prof. Bhat was regarded as a significant contributor to the Department of Medicine and to the broader field of medical education in the region. His professional career was marked by a combination of clinical experience, academic commitment and a strong emphasis on teaching.
For generations of medical students and postgraduate trainees, Prof. Bhat was remembered particularly for his distinctive approach to teaching. His theory and practical classes were considered among the notable facets of his contribution to medical education. He had the ability to bring the realities of clinical medicine into the classroom and encourage students to approach medicine not merely as a subject to be studied, but as a discipline requiring careful observation, clinical reasoning and a patient-centred approach.
His teaching went beyond explaining diagnoses, investigations and treatment protocols. He sought to help students understand how a physician should approach a patient, identify the relevant clinical clues and systematically work through a medical problem. This approach left a lasting impression on many of his students and postgraduate trainees, several of whom continued to remember his classes and the clarity with which he explained complex clinical issues.
Prof. Bhat also made a contribution to medical education through his writings, including books on Emergency Medicine and Hypertension. His work in these areas reflected his commitment to sharing clinical knowledge and supporting students and medical professionals in understanding important aspects of patient care.
During his long association with GMC Srinagar, Prof. Bhat served the Department of Medicine in various capacities and contributed to both its clinical and academic functioning. As Professor and Head of the Department, he shouldered the responsibilities of the department with the experience of a senior clinician and teacher.
His contribution extended beyond his formal responsibilities. Through his interaction with students, residents and colleagues, he became part of the academic culture of the institution. His professional life was closely associated with classrooms, hospital wards, clinical discussions and practical teaching sessions, where his emphasis remained on developing sound clinical understanding among future physicians.
Condoling his demise, Prof. (Dr.) Iffat Hassan, Principal/Dean, Government Medical College Srinagar, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the former Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine.
Prof. Hassan conveyed her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and acknowledged Prof. Bhat’s longstanding contribution to the Department of Medicine and medical education at GMC Srinagar.
She said his passing had left a profound void in the institution and among his colleagues, students and patients. She also acknowledged the respect and affection he earned during his years of service and said that he would be remembered with deep respect, gratitude and affection.
The institution said Prof. Bhat’s passing represents a significant loss to the GMC Srinagar community, particularly to those who had worked alongside him or benefited from his teaching and clinical experience.
Faculty members, administrative staff, residents, nursing and allied healthcare professionals, students and other supporting staff of GMC Srinagar expressed their deepest sympathies to the bereaved family and stood with them in their hour of grief.
For those who knew Prof. Bhat closely, however, his professional legacy is likely to remain particularly vivid in the classrooms and hospital wards where he spent much of his career. His practical sessions, clinical discussions and method of teaching generations of medical students and trainees remain an important part of the memories associated with his years at the institution.
The institution noted that the influence of a dedicated teacher often extends well beyond the period of formal service. Students carry the lessons of their teachers into their own professional lives, and in this respect, Prof. Bhat’s contribution is reflected in the generations of doctors who passed through his classrooms and clinical teaching sessions.
His career also reflected the important role played by senior clinicians in strengthening medical education alongside patient care. Through his work in the Department of Medicine, his responsibilities as its Head, his clinical service and his academic contributions, Prof. Bhat became part of the institutional history of GMC Srinagar.
His passing has therefore been mourned not only as the loss of a senior physician but also as the departure of a teacher whose influence extended across generations of medical professionals.
Government Medical College Srinagar said his distinguished service to medicine, medical education and patient care would remain a part of the institution’s collective memory.
For his colleagues, students and trainees, Prof. Mohammad Yousuf Bhat will be remembered as a physician who combined clinical knowledge with a commitment to teaching, and as an educator whose lessons continued to resonate long after his classes had ended.
