Gunfight rages in Shopian

Srinagar, October 19: An encounter broke out between militants and government forces in Melhura area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday.

Reports reaching Kashmir Despatch said a joint team of Army’s 55 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Melhura.

As the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon the forces, triggering off an gunfight.

A police officer told Kashmir Despatch that contact has been established and firing from both sides is on.
