Hottest day of Srinagar in 40 years

Srinagar, 17 Aug: The summer capital Srinagar on Monday recorded its hottest day in August after 40 years as temperatures reached 35.7 degrees Celsius, more than 6 degrees above normal for this time of the year, Kashmir Weather said.

Today’s temperature also breached the highest of the season so far 35.4 degrees Celsius recorded on August 7.

The highest temperature ever recorded in the month of August in Srinagar was on August 01, 1946 when the mercury had gone up to 36.7 degrees Celsius.

On August 01, 1983 and August 14, 2009 the maximum temperature in Kashmir stood at 35.4 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, border town of Kupwara remained the hottest place in the Valley recording a maximum of 36.7 degree Celsius.

Tourist resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest with a high of 26.2 degree Celsius

Kokernag, Qazigund and Pahalgam recorded the maximum temperature of 32.0°C, 30.4°C and 31.9°C respectively.

The maximum temperature in Jammu, the UT’s winter capital, was recorded at 32.1 degrees Celsius.
Banihal, Bhaderwah, Batote and Katra recorded maximum temperatures of 31.4°C, 34.4°C, 28.0°C and 28.5°C respectively.

Kashmir Weather added that there is a 50 to 95 percent deficit in normal rainfall across all districts of Kashmir.
Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing around 48 percent deficiency in rainfall in the current monsoon season, from June 01 to August 17.

The Kashmir Weather has forecasted that the weather conditions across Kashmir would remain hot and humid for next 2 days, adding that there is a possibility of brief spells of thundershowers on 20 and 21 August over many parts of J&K while maximum temperature on these two days would remain in the range of 27°C to 33°C.
