Implement EWS Category For J&K: Shehla Rashid To President Kovind

Date:

Srinagar, July 23: Ahead of President Ram Nath Kovind’s visit to Jammu & Kashmir which is scheduled for the 26th of this month, Jammu & Kashmir People’s Movement has appealed to the President to pass an ordinance to implement EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) category for competitive exam aspirants from Jammu & Kashmir.

JKPM General Secretary Shehla Rashid in a statement said that, “The talented youth of J&K who have qualified NEET exam on a national level are being deprived because of the non-implementation of EWS Act in J&K.

The career of hundreds of students is at stake because the 103rd Amendment Act has not been extended to Jammu & Kashmir state in the absence of State Assembly.

Students who have cleared exams under the EWS category should not have to suffer because of the prevailing political conditions in the state. It is, therefore, the duty of the Central Government to ensure that the EWS category is implemented without any delay, so as to save the future of hundreds of deserving students.”

The Parliament of India passed the 103rd Amendment Bill which provides up to 10% reservation for Economically Weaker Sections belonging to the General Category on 10th of January, 2019.

It received assent from the President of India on 12th January, 2019. It came to force as an Act on the 14th of January, 2019.

However, the same has not been extended to Jammu & Kashmir state, in the absence of a State Assembly. Voicing support for the students awaiting the implementation of the Act in the state, Shehla Rashid said that, “Numerous students meet us on a daily basis, and their fate hangs by a thread, as there is no clarity on the implementation of the Act.

JKPM appeals to the President of India to address this issue on his visit to J&K.”
