Country suffered losses of 87 thousand crore during 2012-17
Srinagar Dec 17: Amid the continuous internet gag in Kashmir Valley which has entered into 135th day on Tuesday it has been revealed that India has topped at global level while putting impediments over internet facility in the country.
According to agencies, it has been revealed that India has topped at global level in putting curbs over internet shutdown in order to maintain law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir and other states of the country.
Notably the Kashmir Valley is facing the longest ever internet gag which is imposed on August 4 hours before when New Delhi scrapped Article 370 and 35A that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
After J&K, authorities stopped internet facility in several northeastern areas of the country including Murshidabad, Howrah, parts of West Bengal and Aligarh soon after mass protests erupted against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. The bill stokes severe criticism and protest throughout the country in which several people killed and injured hundreds in police action.
American NGO ‘Freedom House’ who is pursuing research over democracy, political freedom and protection of human rights, in its report stated that more than 100 times government put restriction over internet facility in the year 2018.
Research also said that India has resorted continuously to internet shutdown exercise since 2010 and justified the stoppage of spreading rumor but practically it facilitated violent protests at several occasions.
NGO in its report said that on the directions of authorities, cellular companies were compelled to put a full stop over internet services in Jammu and Kashmir at several occasions. It added during the year 2018, more than 36 times internet facility was snapped in 14 states.
The American based NGO added with the help of internet tracker, it has been learnt that long spell of internet shutdown happened in year 2016 when government forces neutralized militant commander BurhanWani in South Kashmir’s Bamdoora hamlet.
The research maintained that study over Global Economic Relations by Indian Council of Research disclosed that from due to internet gag, India has suffered losses of 87 thousand crores from 2012 to 2017.
