Jasprit Bumrah back in India squad, named captain for Ireland tour

Date:

Jasprit Bumrah will mark his comeback in Indian colors as he leads the side in the three T20I series in Ireland starting August 18.

It won’t be the first time that Bumrah leads an Indian side, having done so in the one-off Test match last summer in England.

Bumrah has been out of action owing to a recurring back injury since September 2022 when he made his last appearance for India during the T2oI bilateral series against Australia at home. The right arm pacer had encountered the same injury earlier during the India tour of England in July 2022 and had missed out on two months of cricket.

Complaining of back pain following ahead of the India-South Africa series, Bumrah missed out on the T20 World Cup in Australia and has not played competitive cricket since, including IPL 2023 and the World Test Championship Final last month.

The 29-year-old has been at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) where his progress has been closely monitored by the BCCI, who believe the pace spearhead is ready to play a pivotal role in India’s white ball team for the upcoming Asia Cup and ODI World Cup at home.

Among other additions to the squad, Prasidh Krishna, who last played a game for India during the ODI series against Zimbabwe last year, is also back in the team.

Series schedule:

1st T20I: August 18, Malahide

2nd T2oI: August 20, Malahide

3rd T20I: August 23, Malahide

India squad: Jasprit Bumrah (C), Ruturaj Gaikwad (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Sanju Samson (wk), Jitesh Sharma (wk), Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Shahbaz Ahmed, Ravi Bishnoi, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan
