SRINAGAR, Oct 10: Jammu and Kashmir Police, in collaboration with Safe Hands Dental Health & Awareness Centre, Srinagar, organised a dental health camp under the theme “Reaching the Unreached” on Saturday, bringing the importance of preventive dental care, oral hygiene and early detection of dental problems into focus. The camp featured awareness sessions by dental professionals, a live toothbrushing demonstration and the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled robotic dental checkups for participants.
The camp was inaugurated by Inspector General of Police (IGP), J&K Police, Sujit Kumar, IPS, who also launched the AI-enabled robotic dental checkup facility for participants. The initiative aimed to promote awareness about oral health and facilitate dental screening for police personnel, their families and members of the public.
The programme brought together dental specialists and health professionals to educate participants about common oral health problems, their causes, preventive measures and the importance of seeking timely professional care. By combining awareness sessions with technology-assisted screening, the camp sought to encourage a preventive approach to dental health rather than limiting attention to treatment after symptoms become severe.
The initiative also highlighted the importance of extending healthcare awareness and screening facilities to people who may otherwise have limited access to regular dental consultations. Through its association with Safe Hands Dental Health & Awareness Centre, J&K Police supported an outreach effort focused on making oral health information and preventive services more accessible to the community.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by the organisers, followed by the formal inauguration. The launch of AI-enabled robotic dental checkups was a key feature of the event, drawing attention to the growing role of technology in supporting dental screening and helping people understand their oral health needs.
Experts explain causes and prevention of tooth decay
During the awareness session, Dr. Mumin Rashid, MDS, Safe Hands Dentistry, introduced the “Reaching the Unreached” campaign and explained its objectives, emphasising the need to improve awareness of dental health and encourage people to adopt preventive practices in their daily lives.
The campaign focused on the importance of reaching individuals and families with practical information about oral hygiene, the early recognition of dental problems and the need for regular professional assessment. Such awareness efforts are particularly relevant because many dental conditions can develop gradually, with people often seeking treatment only when pain, infection or other complications begin to interfere with their daily activities.
Dr. Tieka Rashid, Head Clinician at Safe Hands Dentistry, delivered a presentation titled “Cariogenesis: Process of Dental Caries Formation,” explaining how tooth decay begins and progresses. Her session focused on the process through which dental caries develops and the importance of understanding the factors that contribute to the deterioration of tooth structure.
The discussion underlined the value of maintaining proper oral hygiene, limiting frequent exposure to sugary foods and drinks, and seeking dental advice when early signs of decay appear. Understanding how cavities develop can help individuals recognise that tooth decay is not merely a problem to be addressed after pain begins but a condition against which preventive steps can be taken.
The session also reinforced the importance of timely dental consultations, as untreated tooth decay may progress and require more extensive treatment. Regular brushing with fluoride toothpaste, appropriate dietary habits and professional dental examinations can help reduce the risk of cavities and support long-term oral health.
‘Healthy Mouth is Healthy You’ highlights oral-systemic connection
Dr. Shahina Yasmin, MDS, Safe Hands Dentistry, addressed the relationship between oral health and overall well-being in her presentation, “Healthy Mouth is Healthy You.”
Her session highlighted the importance of looking at dental health as an integral part of general healthcare. Oral health problems can affect eating, speaking, comfort and quality of life, while some oral conditions may also be associated with broader health concerns. The presentation encouraged participants to give their mouths the same attention they give to other aspects of their physical health.
The session stressed that healthy teeth and gums depend on consistent daily care, appropriate nutrition and timely professional attention. Bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, tooth sensitivity, swelling and continuing dental pain should not be ignored, as these symptoms may indicate conditions that require assessment by a qualified dental professional.
Participants were encouraged to understand that oral hygiene is not limited to brushing the teeth. Cleaning between teeth, maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding tobacco and attending regular dental checkups are also important elements of preventive care.
The presentation sought to promote a broader understanding of oral health, encouraging individuals to move away from the practice of visiting a dentist only when a problem becomes painful or difficult to manage.
Dental injury management explained
Dr. Muhammad Luqman, BDS Trainee, Safe Hands Dentistry, delivered a session on “Managing Dental Injuries,” focusing on the immediate care required when teeth or other parts of the mouth are injured.
Dental injuries can occur during falls, road accidents, sports activities and other unexpected incidents. Timely and appropriate action may be important in reducing complications and improving the chances of successful treatment, particularly in cases involving broken, displaced or completely knocked-out teeth.
The session highlighted the importance of remaining calm, assessing the injury and arranging prompt professional dental care. Participants were encouraged not to dismiss dental trauma merely because the initial pain appears manageable, as injuries to teeth and surrounding tissues may require examination even when damage is not immediately obvious.
The discussion added a practical dimension to the camp by addressing situations in which people may need to respond quickly before reaching a dental clinic. Awareness of basic first-response measures can help individuals make informed decisions and avoid actions that could worsen an injury.
Holistic health session focuses on preventive lifestyle practices
The camp also included a dedicated take-away session titled “Prevention – Better than Cure,” featuring Mrs. Rina Ojeda, Holistic Health Coach at Harmony by Safe Hands.
She presented “7 Golden Principles for Stellar Health,” focusing on the broader lifestyle practices that contribute to overall well-being and complement preventive healthcare.
The session encouraged participants to recognise that good health is shaped by everyday habits, including nutrition, personal hygiene and other healthy lifestyle choices. The emphasis on prevention reflected the central objective of the camp: helping people understand the value of taking action before health concerns become more serious.
The session complemented the technical presentations by dental professionals, connecting oral hygiene with a wider culture of personal health awareness. It also reinforced the idea that preventive healthcare requires regular attention and consistent effort rather than occasional intervention.
Live toothbrushing demonstration offers practical guidance
One of the practical highlights of the programme was a live toothbrushing demonstration conducted by Dr. Mumin Rashid.
The demonstration showed participants the correct technique for brushing their teeth, translating the information discussed during the awareness sessions into a practical daily routine. While brushing is a familiar activity, improper technique, inadequate duration and inconsistent oral hygiene habits can reduce its effectiveness.
The demonstration aimed to help participants understand the importance of cleaning all tooth surfaces carefully, paying attention to the gumline and maintaining a regular brushing routine. The use of fluoride toothpaste and gentle brushing techniques also forms an important part of protecting teeth and gums.
By providing a live demonstration rather than relying exclusively on lectures, the organisers sought to make the information easier to understand and apply at home. Such practical guidance can be particularly useful for families seeking to establish healthy oral hygiene habits among children and other household members.
The organisers emphasised the importance of carrying these lessons beyond the camp and incorporating them into everyday life. Consistent oral care, combined with regular dental assessment, can help prevent common problems and reduce the likelihood of avoidable complications.
AI-enabled robotic dental screening introduced
From 11:30 am onwards, participants underwent AI-enabled robotic dental checkups, marking a significant technological feature of the camp.
The introduction of AI-assisted dental screening reflected the organisers’ effort to combine preventive healthcare outreach with technology-supported assessment. Such systems may assist in identifying potential dental concerns and helping clinicians determine whether further examination or treatment is required, depending on the capabilities of the equipment and the clinical process followed.
The screening facility was intended to provide participants with an opportunity to assess their dental health and understand whether they might require further professional attention. Early identification of potential problems can encourage timely consultations and help people avoid delaying treatment until symptoms become more severe.
The use of AI-enabled technology, however, is intended to complement rather than replace professional clinical judgement. Any suspected dental condition identified during screening requires appropriate assessment by a qualified dentist, who can determine the need for diagnostic tests, treatment or follow-up care.
The camp therefore combined awareness, practical demonstrations and technology-assisted screening in an effort to make participants more conscious of their oral health needs.
According to the programme outline, [number] participants were screened during the camp. Those requiring further attention were [advised to seek follow-up consultations/referred for further treatment]. The final number of participants screened and the details of follow-up arrangements are to be confirmed by the organisers.
Police-community collaboration promotes preventive healthcare
The dental health camp reflected an outreach-oriented approach to healthcare awareness, with J&K Police and Safe Hands Dental Health & Awareness Centre working together to encourage preventive dental care among the intended beneficiaries.
While dental problems are often associated with pain and discomfort, the camp’s central message was that oral health deserves attention even when no immediate symptoms are present. Awareness of tooth decay, gum disease, dental injuries and correct brushing techniques can help people make better decisions about their health and seek professional assistance when required.
For police personnel, who may have demanding professional schedules, access to awareness programmes and screening opportunities can serve as a reminder not to neglect personal health. Extending the initiative to family members and the public also broadens its potential community benefit.
The organisers thanked J&K Police for supporting the initiative and helping take preventive dental health awareness to the community. The collaboration highlighted the value of bringing healthcare professionals and public institutions together to promote health education and encourage timely consultations.
The camp concluded with a focus on the importance of sustained awareness and individual responsibility in maintaining oral health. Its message was clear: regular brushing, informed dietary choices, appropriate oral hygiene, prompt attention to dental injuries and timely professional checkups are essential components of preventive care.
Through the “Reaching the Unreached” initiative, the organisers sought to encourage participants to make oral health a routine priority and to recognise that preventing dental disease begins with awareness, daily habits and timely access to qualified dental care.
