Kargil swelters as mercury crosses 38 degrees mark

As Kashmir and its peripheral region witness an exceptionally hot summer, Kargil town recorded a maximum temperature of 38.0 degrees Celsius on Monday. The minimum temperature recorded was 21.4 degrees Celsius.

The mercury in Kargil today is expected to reach 40 degree Celsius, as per the data provided by the Indian Metereological Department.

Kargil district is home Dras town, which is the second coldest inhabited place on earth with mercury having fallen to minus 60 degrees Celsius in January 1995.

Leh, the main city in Ladakh, recorded 34.2 degree Celsius maximum temperature while the minimum temperature was 20.9 Degree Celsius.

There has been an exceptional temperature rise since over a week in the region and Srinagar has recorded several degrees above the normal during the past week.
