Book explores how AI is transforming modern medicine across the globe

SRINAGAR, July 22: In a momentous academic achievement for Jammu and Kashmir, three faculty members from the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora—Dr. Muzafar A. Macha, Dr. Assif Assad, and Dr. Muzafar Rasool Bhat—have co-edited a globally published book titled “Artificial Intelligence in Human Health and Diseases,” brought out by the internationally renowned academic publisher Springer Nature.
The landmark volume delves deeply into the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in revolutionizing healthcare systems worldwide. From enhancing diagnostics and treatment protocols to enabling precision medicine and AI-driven drug development, the book encapsulates cutting-edge applications of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) in the medical sciences.
The publication compiles contributions from leading experts across the world and provides a comprehensive overview of AI’s utility in areas such as radiogenomics, oncology, medical imaging, biomarker discovery, and bioinformatics. It also addresses practical challenges in the field—including data scarcity, explainability, model generalization, and clinical integration—making it a critical resource for scientists, clinicians, researchers, and policy-makers.
Editors at the Forefront of Innovation
Dr. Muzafar A. Macha, a Ramalingaswami Fellow and Head of the Watson-Crick Centre for Molecular Medicine at IUST. A noted cancer biologist, Dr. Macha has over 90 peer-reviewed publications and international research experience from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, USA.
Dr. Assif Assad, Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the Centre for AI at IUST, holds a PhD from IIT Roorkee. A prolific researcher, he has ten patents to his name and has led more than a dozen funded projects across healthcare and agriculture from premier bodies like DST and ICMR.
Dr. Muzafar Rasool Bhat, Senior Assistant Professor at the Centre for AI, IUST, earned his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Kashmir. His research interests span bioinformatics, probabilistic modeling, and AI applications in agriculture and public health, with over 40 peer-reviewed publications to his credit.
A Bridge Between Technology and Humanity
Speaking about the impact of the book, Dr. Muzafar Rasool Bhat emphasized its relevance in the current era of AI-driven healthcare innovation. “This book is an effort to make AI understandable and applicable in real-world medical settings. It’s a timely contribution to both science and society,” he said. “We hope this work encourages more interdisciplinary collaborations, especially from developing regions like ours, where AI has immense potential to make healthcare more efficient, accessible, and affordable.”
In the editors’ preface, they note AI’s powerful ability to detect complex patterns “invisible to the human eye”, which has the potential to reshape diagnostic and therapeutic protocols, ushering in a new era of personalized and predictive medicine.
The publication of “Artificial Intelligence in Human Health and Diseases” not only marks a major scholarly milestone for IUST but also positions Jammu and Kashmir as a significant contributor to the global scientific and medical innovation landscape. The book is now available internationally via Springer’s online platforms and is expected to serve as a critical academic resource for years to come.
