Kashmir’s Green Comeback Begins with a Million Roots

Date:

TIPL–KGECL join hands to drive ‘Go Green Kashmir’ afforestation mission across J&K

TAUSEEF AHMAD
SRINAGAR, Dec 20: In a major push to reverse ecological degradation and shield Kashmir from the accelerating impacts of climate change, Trumboo Industries Private Limited (TIPL) has joined hands with Kashmir Geographic Eco-Cooperative Limited (KGECL) to roll out a long-term, science-backed afforestation mission across Jammu and Kashmir. The two organisations have formalised their collaboration through a 15-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the ambitious “Go Green Kashmir: One Million Trees Afforestation Project,” a large-scale environmental restoration drive aimed at reviving degraded landscapes, strengthening water systems, and restoring native biodiversity.
While the initiative spans the entire Union Territory, special emphasis has been placed on the ecologically sensitive Pampore–Khrew–Khonmoh belt, designated as the VIHI District under the project’s eco-restoration blueprint. This zone is a critical environmental corridor encompassing Pampore tehsil in Pulwama district and extending from Athwajan to Khonmoh in Srinagar. The region is known for its fragile saffron Karewas, fast-disappearing wetlands, and vulnerable Wasturwan forest catchments—areas that have suffered decades of deforestation, land misuse, and climate stress.
The MoU was signed in the presence of senior officials, including Abhijeet Joshi, Regional Director of the Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Committee (JKPCC), Er. Bilal Ahmad Khan, Divisional Officer, Pulwama, along with representatives from the corporate and environmental sectors, marking a rare convergence of industry, government, and grassroots conservation efforts.
Designed as a data-driven ecological intervention, the project seeks to tackle multiple environmental challenges simultaneously—ranging from soil erosion and groundwater depletion to the alarming decline of native vegetation. The afforestation plan prioritises the plantation of climate-resilient and indigenous tree species, carefully selected to regenerate watersheds, stabilise degraded slopes, enrich village commons, and rejuvenate Wasturwan catchment areas. By doing so, the initiative aims to enhance carbon sequestration, improve biodiversity, and restore the region’s natural resilience against extreme weather events.
In a region where climate change has begun to manifest through rising temperatures, erratic precipitation, shrinking wetlands, and frequent land degradation, large-scale tree plantation is emerging as a critical defence mechanism. The project positions afforestation not merely as an environmental activity, but as a long-term investment in Kashmir’s ecological and economic security.
“We are working closely with government agencies and local communities to plant trees that will safeguard Kashmir’s environment for generations to come,” said Nadeem Ahmad Dar, Project Director of Go Green Kashmir. “This initiative goes far beyond planting saplings. It is about healing damaged land, reviving water sources, and creating green livelihoods that protect both nature and people’s future.”
The Go Green Kashmir: One Million Trees Afforestation Project is scheduled to be formally launched on March 21, 2026, coinciding with the International Day of Forests. The launch will see active participation from VIHI District stakeholders, with on-ground plantation drives beginning across the Khrew–Khonmoh landscape. A key feature of the project is its commitment to post-plantation care, with saplings to be monitored and maintained for two to three years, ensuring high survival rates and long-term ecological benefits.
Calling the agreement a milestone for collaborative environmental governance, JKPCC Regional Director Abhijeet Joshi said, “This MoU is not a symbolic gesture. It represents a shared commitment to securing Kashmir’s green future. By engaging corporate partners, environmental protection becomes a collective responsibility rather than a standalone effort.”
The initiative also aligns closely with the Jammu and Kashmir government’s broader environmental restoration and pollution control strategies, with JKPCC extending institutional support through an official press note endorsing the project’s objectives and methodology. The focus on sustained, evidence-based ecological planning is expected to address local environmental challenges more effectively than short-term plantation drives.
By combining TIPL’s industrial eco-management expertise with KGECL’s deep-rooted community conservation experience, the partnership aims to deliver measurable and lasting environmental outcomes. The project also places strong emphasis on community participation, equipping local residents—especially youth—with practical conservation tools and a sense of environmental stewardship.
Highlighting the project’s significance for Pulwama’s saffron-growing belt, Er. Bilal Ahmad Khan noted, “This initiative reflects responsible environmental leadership by harmonising industrial development with ecological restoration. Its focus on native species and watershed health in a critical agricultural zone makes it a replicable model for sustainable growth across Jammu and Kashmir.”
Describing the MoU as a catalyst for change, Nadeem Ahmad Dar added, “We see this partnership as a turning point—one that can spark community-led green movements across Kashmir’s valleys, leaving a legacy of resilience, sustainability, and environmental hope for generations to come.”
