Kupwara residents protest against water scarcity

Kupwara, August 24: Residents of Drugmulla area of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Monday blocked the highway as the area continued to battle an acute drinking water shortage for days.

Residents of Zamindar Mohalla and Magray Mohalla of Drugmulla on Monday hit the streets to highlight the water crisis in the area.

As per Kashmir Despatch Correspondent, scores of people mostly women staged a protest against the Jal Shakti department for failing to provide regular water supply to the area from the past many days.

The protesting women demanded immediate restoration of water supply.

“We had brought the issue to the notice of the concerned administration but no improvement has been witnessed yet,” the protesting residents said as per Kashmir Despatch Correspondent.

The protest was called off after the officials assured to provide uninterrupted water supply to the area.

An official at Jal Shakti department Kupwara talking with this reporter said that a team will visit the area to redress this water crisis. He said that since months there is a water crisis across Kashmir but the department is working round the clock for the people for providing every kind of relief. The officer further said that in the area there is a tubewell system and when the electricity goes there residents are facing problems. The officer, however, added that will send water tanker also to the area so that people will not suffer more.
