KUPWARA, July 18: Keran Valley in the north Kashmir district of Kupwara has undergone a remarkable transformation from a heavily restricted area to a flourishing tourist destination, attracting visitors from across India.

Previously inaccessible due to security concerns, Keran Valley has witnessed significant developments to promote tourism while ensuring the safety and comfort of travelers. With improved infrastructure, better road connectivity, and enhanced security measures, Keran has shed its past reputation and is now showcasing its breathtaking potential.

Local traveler Peerzaza Zubair shared with Kashmir Despatch that after the government opened up border tourism, tourists are flocking to the mesmerizing beauty of Keran. Once considered a dream destination, Keran’s lush green meadows and the shimmering Kishenganga River flowing through the valley have captivated the hearts of all who visit.

Zubair added that the local administration is actively taking measures to encourage tourism in Keran, facilitating economic growth and improving livelihoods for the local population.

Journalist Irfan Lone, who frequently visits the valley, expressed his happiness at the administration’s decision to open this border location.

He emphasized that the move has had a positive impact on the local population, enabling them to generate income by offering comfortable homestays for travelers.

Lone highlighted that adventure enthusiasts find Keran an ideal destination, fostering opportunities for activities such as river rafting, hiking, and paragliding. Additionally, Keran’s rich cultural heritage and local delicacies further attract tourists, offering them a unique experience.

A civil officer, in conversation with this reporter, noted that Keran Valley has witnessed a surge in tourist interest, with a record-breaking number of around 1,000 visitors in a single day over the weekend. The officer expressed optimism about future numbers and anticipated a continuous increase in visitors from both local and international communities.

Efforts are underway to promote Keran as a sustainable tourism destination, with a focus on responsible practices to preserve its natural beauty, the officer added.

The growing popularity of Keran Valley as an escape from daily routines and an immersive experience in its tranquility and splendor indicates that it is on track to become a thriving tourist hub in Kashmir.
