KVK Ganderbal organized one day Awareness Workshop on ‘Solid Waste Biochar Intervention under temperate environment’ in collaboration with Division of Basic Science & Horticulture & EAP on Decision Support Systems on 27th November 2024 at KVK campus.
The programme was organized to increase awareness regarding sustainability and food security & provided insights regarding solid waste management, climate mitigation strategies, biochar properties & production technology. The daylong workshop was attended by Scientists & Supporting Staff of KVK & Division of Basic Science & Humanities, SKUAST-K Shalimar, Rural Youth & farmers.
The programme started with introductory address by Dr. Faiqa Syeed, Scientist KVK Ganderbal. In the forenoon session, Dr. Shahid Ahmad Paddar & Dr. Shabir Ahmad, Scientists of Division of Basic Science & Humanities, Faculty of Horticulture gave detailed lectures regarding Microbial Population visa viz Soil Health & Biochemical aspects of Soil Health respectively. Prof. Javid Iqbal Bhat, Senior Professor & Head Division of Basic Sciences & Humanities, SKUAST-K provided a comprehensive & detailed overview regarding Production Technology of Biochar under temperate conditions.
He appraised the participants regarding the significance of biochar in carbon sequestration, improving soil stability as well as nutrient efficiency & highlighted the importance of biochar production as an ideal method to address key issues like soil degradation, water pollution & climate change. Later, Prof. Ishfaq Abidi, Chief Scientist & Head, KVK emphasized the importance of solid waste management in agriculture & stressed on adoption of sustainable systems for reducing deleterious effects on environment. He focused on use of modern farming practices & innovative approaches like weather forecasting & DSS for better decision making in agriculture & allied sectors. Dr. Abidi advised farmers to adopt SKUAST-K developed varieties, latest technologies & inputs for better income generation & improving their socio-economic status.
In the afternoon session, Dr. Suja Nabi Qureshi & Dr. Farooq Ahmad, Scientists of the KVK deliberated on production technology of fruits & judicious application of chemical fertilizers respectively. The participants were taken on a field visit across the campus of the Farm for demonstration of IFS Model in the KVK, which was enlightening & encouraging for them. The proceedings concluded with Interaction cum Feedback Session, wherein participants raised significant queries, which were deliberated on by the Scientists.
The participants expressed deep gratitude for the programme and wished for more programmes in future. The session concluded with formal vote of thanks by Dr. Rafiya Munshi.
