JAMMU, Mar 3: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, addressing the legislators at the commencement of the Budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly in Jammu, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to restoring full statehood, acknowledging it as one of the foremost aspirations of the people.
Speaking on the issue, LG Sinha emphasized that the government recognizes the emotional and political significance of statehood and remains steadfast in facilitating its restoration through active engagement with all stakeholders.
“One of the foremost aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir is the restoration of full statehood. My government remains dedicated to addressing this legitimate desire while ensuring peace, stability, and progress,” Sinha said in his address.
The push for statehood has been a major political demand in Jammu and Kashmir. In October last year, the newly-formed J&K Cabinet passed a resolution seeking early restoration of statehood. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah subsequently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other Union Ministers, urging them to act on the resolution.
Emphasis on Communal Harmony and Governance
Sinha underscored Jammu and Kashmir’s rich cultural heritage, rooted in centuries-old traditions of amity and brotherhood. He reiterated the government’s resolve to preserve this ethos by fostering inclusivity, peace, and communal harmony.
“We take immense pride in our composite culture and traditions. My government is committed to ensuring that Jammu and Kashmir remains a beacon of unity in diversity, safeguarding the aspirations of our people from divisive influences,” he asserted.
He also emphasized that the ongoing Budget session is not a mere legislative exercise but a reflection of the government’s commitment to good governance, transparency, and inclusive development.
Energy Sector Transformation
The Lieutenant Governor highlighted significant developments in the energy sector, noting that major hydropower projects, including Pakal Dul, Kiru, Kwar, and Ratle, are in advanced stages of completion.
“These projects will collectively add 3,014 MW to our energy capacity, strengthening the region’s energy security and benefiting the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Several other projects like Dulhasti-II and Kirthai-I are also in the pipeline,” he said.
Sinha described these initiatives as crucial steps toward making Jammu and Kashmir a hub for renewable energy, ultimately driving economic growth and self-sufficiency in power generation.
Focus on Kashmiri Pandits’ Rehabilitation
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the return of displaced Kashmiri Pandits, Sinha assured that efforts would be intensified to ensure their dignified rehabilitation.
“We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for Kashmiri migrants wishing to return to the Valley. Construction of transit accommodations for migrant employees will be accelerated, ensuring they have suitable housing,” he stated.
The initiative, he added, reflects the administration’s broader goal of fostering inclusivity and restoring confidence among all communities.
Historic Budget Session
LG Sinha termed the upcoming budget, to be presented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, as a historic moment for Jammu and Kashmir.
“This is the first budget in over seven years to be presented by an elected government, symbolizing the people’s power and their aspirations. It is not just a financial document; it reflects the hopes of the masses for a brighter future,” he remarked.
He emphasized that the budget would prioritize economic growth, infrastructure development, and social welfare programs, ensuring that the needs of all sections of society are met.
Making J&K an Educational Hub
Sinha also stressed the need to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a leading educational hub, with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship.
“We will actively encourage innovation, incubation, and entrepreneurship, fostering a culture of start-ups among students,” he stated.
The Lieutenant Governor concluded his address by reiterating the government’s unwavering commitment to the progress and prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir, assuring that all policies and initiatives would be aimed at ensuring long-term peace and development in the region.
