SRINAGAR, Aug 4: In a concerning development, the Low Transmission Lines connecting few areas in Rawalpora came down in the middle of heavy traffic road connection Sanatnagar with Rangreth on Friday morning.

Though the pedestrians had a miraculous escape, the residents have urged the PDD administrative department to probe the careless and apathetic attitude of the PDD executive engineer Rajbagh who has never bothered to visit these areas for a first hand account of the condition of power transmission lines.

Mohammad Ashraf Dar, SMC councillor from ward Rawalpora, who was present at the site of mishap said: “The Power Development Department (PDD) in Rajbagh, Srinagar, has been facing criticism as low-tension (LT) power lines continue to dangerously dangle over the heads of residents in Rawalpora and it’s adjoining areas.”
Dar said this negligence by the department has raised serious safety concerns among the local community.

The issue came to light when residents started reporting the precarious state of the LT lines, which are hanging perilously close to buildings and public spaces. Some of the lines were observed to be barely secured, posing a significant risk to public safety. With strong winds and monsoon season underway, the situation is even more critical as there is a higher risk of accidents and power outages.
Local authorities and community leaders have expressed their frustration with the inaction of the PDD in addressing this problem. Despite numerous complaints and appeals, the department has remained inert, failing to take necessary actions to rectify the situation.
“The safety of our residents is at stake here. We have repeatedly urged the PDD to take immediate action and secure these lines properly. It’s disheartening to see them turn a blind eye to this critical issue,” said a concerned resident Tufail Ahmad.
The LT lines, which distribute power to households and businesses in the area, have become a visible symbol of the negligence and inefficiency plaguing the power infrastructure in Rajbagh.
Local businesses establishments in the are also feeling the brunt of this issue, as the uncertainty of reliable power supply affects their operations and financial stability.
As the situation worsens, the residents are left wondering why such a basic safety concern remains unresolved, and they are demanding accountability from the responsible authorities.
The district administration has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the delayed response to the issue.
In the meantime, residents of the area have been advised to exercise caution and avoid areas with low-hanging LT lines. “They are encouraged to report any further concerns to the local authorities promptly,” said a senior officer in district administration Srinagar while talking to Kashmir Despatch.
As the debate over the accountability of the Power Development Department escalates, the safety of residents remains in jeopardy. Urgent action is needed to rectify the situation and ensure the power infrastructure becomes secure and reliable for the well-being of the community.
